Bringing Development & Media Together

“I have yet to wander many miles far yonder, and with so much left to ponder, I choose the road.”

– Greta Van Fleet

Welcome!

Media of all sort have the power to be immensely impactful in our lives. Living in this world of development, media, and music, I see it first-hand everyday. With my background in psychology, my skills in creating, editing, and analyzing media, and my passion for all things music, I hope to work to use media and its magic for good!

About me!

My name is Sara Brown and I’m a second-year graduate student in the Human Development and Family Studies program at Purdue University! I’m also a music journalist and avid concert goer!

I find myself living in two completely different worlds. What can I say? I like to keep busy! Balancing graduate studies and research along with music journalism and traveling for shows takes some willpower, but thus far it has been incredibly rewarding!

Academically, I’m interested in how children’s media, particularly educational media, can impact development, and how interactivity within the media, parental involvement in media consumption, and other factors can make media more effective!

Outside of academia, I’m a music journalist, and I also dabble in music journalism, radio show hosting, photography, concert photography & videography, audio production, and thanks to an undergraduate minor in Creative Media Production, podcasting, video production, and general content creation!

This is a site for me to show off the work I’ve done and talk about new projects I’m currently involved in. Take a look around and see what I’ve been working on!

What's New!

These are my latest projects, those recently completed and those currently in progress!

Eclectic Corner

Eclectic Corner is now on-demand on Spotify with new episodes releasing weekly!

While not technically a re-brand, Eclectic Corner is coming back to life after a slow few months with weekly episodes and more fun than ever before!

Shows still feature the hits and hidden gems from the 1950s to today – it’s still the Eclectic Corner you know and love!

New episodes drop every Saturday morning, so check the link below often and don’t miss a thing!

Impact of Educational Television
(Honors Thesis)

My Honors Thesis was successfully defended and accepted by the Honors College at Arkansas State University in May! With the guidance and expertise of my thesis advisor, Dr. David Saarnio, and my thesis committee members, Dr. Loretta N. McGregor and Dr. Wayne Wilkinson, I looked into how college students believe the educational television they watched in childhood (e.g., Sesame Street, Dora the Explorer, Blue’s Clues, The Magic School Bus) impacted them on cognitive, social, and emotional dimensions.

I presented findings from this research at multiple conferences, and you can see all my presentations below!

Association for Psychological Science (APS)

This presentation focused on quantitative results and was presented online at the APS 2021 Virtual Convention from May 26, 2021 – September 1, 2021 under the title, “Children’s Educational Television: Does it Stick with You Forever, Or Do You Grow Out of It?”

Create @ State

This presentation focused on quantitative results and was presented online at the Create@State 2021 Virtual Symposium at Arkansas State University under the title, “Impact of Educational Television.”

American Psychological Association (APA)

This presentation focused on qualitative results and was presented online at the APA Virtual 2021 Convention from August 12 – August 14, 2021 under the title, “Yes Virginia, Dora and Elmo Will Stay With You Forever.”

Writing for Banded

I am officially a feature writer for BANDED, a media outlet and boutique PR agency “where artists and listeners band together,” with contributors from all over the world! I’m currently having the time of my life writing about all things music and getting to know the BANDED team!
